Kennesaw State Wins Overtime Thriller Against Rice in Basketball

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Kennesaw State University defeated Rice University 89-84 in overtime during the Coconut Hoops tournament opener on Monday night at Alico Arena.

The game featured a thrilling finish. Kennesaw State trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half but rallied to tie the game at 79 with just seconds left on the clock. Senior guard Simeon Cottle made a jumper to force overtime.

Rice started the game strong, initially taking a 16-13 lead with three free throws. However, Kennesaw State responded with a 12-2 run for a 25-18 advantage. After trading baskets, Rice entered halftime with a narrow lead of 41-40.

In the second half, Rice extended its lead to 56-45, but Kennesaw State clawed back, hitting crucial three-pointers. With just four minutes left in regulation, Rice held a 74-68 lead before Kennesaw State surged back to even the score.

In overtime, KSU took advantage of Rice’s struggles, missing many key shots down the stretch. Kennesaw State secured the lead with a Cottle three-pointer after a Smith turnover. Ultimately, KSU held off Rice for the win.

Kennesaw State shot 40% from the field and made 76.7% from the free throw line, while Rice struggled at 41.9% from the field and only 63.2% from the foul line.

This game marked a significant milestone for Kennesaw State as it was their first victory against a team from the American Conference. Clarence Seals led KSU with 25 points, showcasing his ability to perform in clutch moments during overtime.

Rice’s next matchup will be against Florida Gulf Coast on November 25 at 6 p.m. CT, as they look to bounce back in the tournament.
