Tom Hanks Play This World Of Tomorrow

NEW YORK, NY — Tom Hanks and James Glossman debut their time-traveling play, “This World of Tomorrow,” at The Shed in Hudson Yards. The new work tells the story of Bert Allenberry, a tech titan in 2089, who is looking for fulfillment in life.

Despite his glossy existence, Bert is unhappy, with scenes set primarily in his office. He and his girlfriend, Cyndee, played by Kerry Bishé, first meet at the 1939 World’s Fair in Queens. Innovative projections designed by Derek McLane depict this historic event, featuring moments like the Lagoon of Nations.

To escape his discontent, Cyndee buys Bert a quarter-billion-dollar experience to visit the past. On his first trip to June 8, 1939, Bert hears a captivating phrase: “The present is but an instant between an infinite past and a hurrying future,” which stirs his imagination about possibilities.

Bert returns to the Worlds Fair, enchanted, and meets Carmen, a local played by Kelli O’Hara. His attraction grows, complicating his relationship with Cyndee, who is also his business partner.

The play explores themes of nostalgia and the desire for a romantic relationship across generations. Critics have responded with mixed sentiments. While some appreciate Hanks’ performance, they point to a disjointed script and clumsy direction by Kenny Leon.

Hanks adapted the play from his own short stories, showcasing elements of romance reminiscent of classic films. However, reviewers claim that its script can’t sustain its ambitious ideas and is marred by awkward dialogue.

Despite its shortcomings, the production features strong performances from its cast and engaging visual elements. O’Hara’s portrayal of Carmen has received particular praise for bringing depth to the character.

As audiences continue to fill the theater, the question remains whether Hanks’ aspirations for the stage will connect as meaningfully as anticipated.
