Spurs Face Tough Decision on Devin Vassell After Recent Loss
San Antonio, TX — The San Antonio Spurs are grappling with tough decisions regarding guard Devin Vassell following their recent loss to the Phoenix Suns. Despite a strong start to the season, the team’s second defeat at the hands of the Suns has sparked discussions about the need for upgrades in several key positions.
Vassell, who is owed $105.6 million over the next three seasons, has come under intense scrutiny for his performance. While he has been a reliable contributor, questions remain about whether he meets expectations for a player at his salary level. This season, Vassell has been viewed as a good starting guard, but the Spurs likely expected more when they extended his contract.
Despite the criticism, Vassell’s play has kept him from being a liability on the roster, preserving the Spurs’ ability to trade him if necessary. His high salary could facilitate acquiring a star player, given the increasing salary cap.
The Spurs might consider moving on from Vassell soon, especially as they look to consolidate salaries. The emergence of Julian Champagnie as a potential replacement could ease this transition. Champagnie offers defensive versatility and a good shooting touch, which the Spurs desperately need.
Another player who could fill Vassell’s role is Stephon Castle, should the Spurs develop a successful three-guard lineup. Vassell’s value is not limited to being just a stopgap; he has made significant defensive contributions this season and performed well in clutch situations.
Offensively, however, Vassell’s 3-point shooting has slipped compared to his peak last season, when he averaged 38.7% on seven attempts per game. He is still above league average this season, attempting 6.9 shots per game. Yet, with a roster featuring the likes of Victor Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox, Vassell’s role as a third or even fourth scoring option diminishes his impact.
In isolation, averaging around 14 points with solid defense would be acceptable for a fourth option. However, being compensated like an above-average starter complicates matters for the Spurs, making it increasingly crucial for him to elevate his performance or risk being replaced.
