Warriors’ Interest in Domantas Sabonis Trade Remains Unlikely
San Francisco, CA — The Golden State Warriors have been discussed as a potential destination for All-Star center Domantas Sabonis as the NBA’s mid-season trade deadline approaches. However, recent reports suggest the Warriors are unlikely to pursue a trade for Sabonis, who currently plays for the Sacramento Kings.
NBA insider Evan Sidery from Forbes weighed in on the speculation, noting a proposed trade that would send Sabonis and guard Keon Ellis to Golden State, in exchange for Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, and Buddy Hield. Although the trade might seem feasible financially, many within the league question whether the Warriors would be willing to part with essential roster pieces for a center whose fit may not align with the team’s needs.
“In truth, I don’t think that the Warriors are going to factor into any Sabonis Sweepstakes. For a number of reasons,” said Sidery. He added, “How many valued elements of its roster would the Warriors truly be willing to part with for a center who isn’t a floor-spacer or a rim protector?”
Concerns about Sabonis extend beyond his playing style. With a defense that has been characterized as underwhelming and a hefty contract—over $95 million owed over the next two years—many analysts question whether the investment is worth it for Golden State.
While the Warriors are open to making moves ahead of the trade deadline, the buzz surrounding Sabonis may be fueled by Sacramento’s interest in Kuminga rather than a genuine desire to acquire the All-Star. Kuminga, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury, has emerged as a focal point of potential trade discussions.
Additionally, Sabonis’ recent injury—he is expected to miss the next three to four weeks due to a partially torn meniscus—complicates any potential move for the Warriors. Despite his impressive stats this season, averaging 17.2 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game, his absence raises further questions.
As speculation surrounding trades continues, the Warriors may look for opportunities to strengthen their roster, but a trade for Sabonis appears unlikely at this juncture.
