San Jose Sharks Call Up Pavol Regenda Amid Roster Changes
San Jose, California — The San Jose Sharks have called up winger Pavol Regenda, 25, from the San Jose Barracuda on Monday. This move comes after defenseman Vincent Desharnais was placed on injured reserve (IR), providing the Sharks with more flexibility on their roster.
Regenda has only scored four goals in 19 games this season in the AHL. In comparison, Sharks prospects Igor Chernyshov and Quentin Musty are performing well, with Chernyshov recording 10 goals and 16 points in 13 games this November and Musty accumulating six goals and 15 points in the same stretch.
“Stats don’t mean everything,” Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky said in response to questions about Regenda’s call-up. “There are finer details for you to play up here that you have to play with.” Warsofsky emphasized the importance of players developing habits both with and without the puck.
Regenda is viewed as a veteran option for the Sharks, having played 19 games in the NHL. Warsofsky noted, “He’s been playing good, playing a heavy style that we’ve been looking for.” Regenda’s skills in physical play and ability to score in close quarters is expected to bolster the Sharks’ offense.
Regenda is likely to slot into a fourth-line role if he plays in tonight’s game. “In a perfect world, we really don’t want to call up one of those young guys and put them on a line where they can’t reach their full potential,” Warsofsky added.
Looking ahead, Desharnais will miss tonight’s game against the Utah Mammoth and potentially more with an upper-body injury. Warsofsky confirmed that Desharnais’ injury was not related to a hit endured during a game against the Colorado Avalanche.
Forward Adam Gaudette is a game-time decision after missing the morning skate due to illness. Coach Warsofsky did not disclose details on other decisions regarding player line-ups. This evening’s game pits the Sharks against the Mammoth at 7 PM PT at SAP Center. Fans can catch the action live on NBC Sports California and on the Sharks Audio Network.
