Trump Stimulus Checks 2023

WASHINGTON – Speculation about new stimulus checks swirls as the Trump administration has not confirmed any upcoming payments. Online rumors suggest checks could arrive before the year ends, but Congress has yet to authorize any legislation for new payments.

The last economic impact payments were issued in 2021. Future checks will require new congressional approval. The IRS announced in 2024 that about 1 million taxpayers who had not claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit on their tax returns would receive automatic payments. The maximum amount is $1,400 per individual, and eligible taxpayers did not need to take any action to receive these funds, which will be sent by direct deposit or paper check between December 2024 and January 2025.

President Trump suggested on his Truth Social platform that tariffs might fund future payments, claiming a dividend of at least $2,000 per person. However, this proposal has faced skepticism from budget experts. Erica York, from the Tax Foundation, questioned the feasibility of such payments, stating, “The numbers just don’t check out.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent echoed this sentiment, indicating the rebate could be structured as tax cuts rather than direct payments.

Violet Jira, a reporter for NOTUS, commented on the uncertainty surrounding these proposed payments, noting that administration officials indicated a commitment to supporting middle to low-income individuals earning $100,000 or less. Despite this commitment, Jira remarked, “It’s difficult to tell” if the payments will materialize.

Authorities in Northern Virginia are warning citizens about fraudulent claims related to stimulus payments. Online posts about specific check amounts, such as $1,702 or $1,390, are often tied to state-level programs or scams. The IRS continues to caution taxpayers about fraudulent messages attempting to steal personal information.

As the discussions continue on possible stimulus checks, the Trump administration also faces challenges regarding its broad tariffs affecting consumer prices for various goods.
