Aari Mcdonald Wnba Indiana Fever Debut

INDIANAPOLIS — Aari McDonald made an impressive debut for the Indiana Fever on June 7, 2025, stepping up in a crucial moment as the team faced injuries to key players. The Fever were in dire need of a point guard after Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham were sidelined.

McDonald, who recently signed with the Fever through an emergency hardship exemption, contributed significantly in her first game against the Washington Mystics. Coming off the bench, she played 27 minutes, scoring 7 points, dishing out 5 assists, and recording 3 steals. McDonald’s performance helped the Fever snap a losing streak, leading to an 85-76 victory.

“It felt good tonight to finally get back and just play,” McDonald said. “The team and fans were very welcoming and made sure I had everything to be successful tonight.”

The 5-foot-6 guard was called upon after the Fever lost their two primary ballhandlers during a previous game. With limited practice time, McDonald had to quickly familiarize herself with her new team, studying film on the flight to Indianapolis. She asked questions and absorbed as much information as possible to prepare for her debut.

“I had to be a sponge these last couple of days, and I think that’s helped me tonight,” McDonald said. Coach Stephanie White praised McDonald, highlighting her ability to execute plays despite being new to the system. “She just knows it from watching the film and from going over it with our assistant coach,” White said.

With the Fever’s backcourt depth tested, McDonald’s role became even more vital. Sydney Colson was the only active ballhandler available in the absence of Clark and Cunningham. McDonald’s defensive efforts included drawing offensive fouls and picking up crucial steals to set the tone for her team.

“She brings a different energy and tenacity, which we really needed,” Clark said. “She got us into our offense well, so I’m really impressed with her.”

As McDonald aims to prove herself in the league, she remains focused on her performance and potential future with the Fever. “For me, I just got to leave it all on the court. This is an audition either for the Fever or for another team,” she said.

Currently, McDonald is on a short-term contract, which allows her to play while the Fever manage their roster amid injuries. The potential return of players like Clark may complicate her status, but for now, McDonald is eager to continue making an impact.
