Actors Liz Gillies and Milo Manheim Shine in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’

NEW YORK — Liz Gillies and Milo Manheim, co-stars of the musical Little Shop of Horrors, shared their experiences of performing on stage during their opening night, discussing their chemistry as a romantic duo and the significance of their roles.
Gillies, 31, plays Audrey, while Manheim, 24, takes on Seymour in the beloved horror-rock comedy about a carnivorous plant wreaking havoc on Skid Row. The production has been a hit, often selling out as fans flock to witness the duo, who grew up as household names on Nickelodeon and Disney Channel.
“The audience feels a connection to us,” Gillies expressed, emphasizing the nostalgia both actors bring to the stage. “Many attended the show because they loved us as child stars.”
After missing some rehearsals due to illness, Manheim noted a unique aspect of their partnership: “We’re not only building our chemistry naturally, but I feel lucky it’s Liz I’m performing with. We vibe well and have a great connection,” he said.
Gillies shared similar sentiments, adding that forming their dynamic transitioned smoothly during rehearsals. “We’ve bonded over our shared experiences and childhoods in entertainment,” she remarked. “And luckily, we don’t hate each other yet.”
Opening night was particularly special for Gillies as it marked her return to the theater community after over a decade. “There was definitely some pressure stepping back into theater,” she said. “It’s such a cherished production for me, given that it’s my favorite Broadway show. But I knew I had to take on this challenge.”
For Manheim, whose career has revolved around projects aimed at younger audiences, taking on a darker role in Little Shop has been liberating. “I love spreading positivity and doing projects for kids, but this has allowed me to explore a different side of performance,” he explained. “I’m grateful that I’m branching out creatively.”
The opening night was also filled with nostalgia for Gillies, who had a surprise reunion with her former castmates from Victorious, Avan Jogia and Daniella Monet. “It was an emotional experience. Having my friends there made it feel even more special,” she added.
Reflecting on their journey as performers, both actors highlighted the importance of their early careers in shaping who they are now. “I appreciate that Liz had such a positive experience with Nickelodeon,” Manheim said. “It’s a unique bond we share.”
As for future collaborations, both actors expressed a desire to work together again. “I’d love to create something original,” Manheim said, sparking curiosity for an impending idea Gillies hinted at. “I have something in mind but I’ll save it for later!”
Tickets for Little Shop of Horrors are currently available, but with the stars’ limited run, audiences are encouraged to act quickly.
