TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama football star Ryan Williams, known for his electrifying plays on the field, recently joked about taking on a new role on the sidelines during an appearance on a podcast. The Crimson Tide wide receiver quipped, “I’m gonna be standing on the bench, ya feel me?” during the episode, sparking laughter from co-host Jaylen Mbakwe and Alabama basketball players Aden Holloway and Labaron Philon.

Williams, who turned heads during his true freshman season, has become a household name in college football. His celebrity status, however, has come with its challenges. Recalling a game against UNC-Asheville, Philon noted how fans disrupted Williams’ attempt to enjoy the game as a regular student. “You couldn’t even watch the game,” Philon said. “They came all the way down to where you were just to take a picture.”

Despite the distractions, Williams remains focused on his goals. Speaking to reporters at a Senior Bowl practice in Mobile, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer expressed confidence in Williams’ growth. “I know that he’s got much higher goals than what he accomplished this year,” DeBoer said. “I’m really excited about him taking the next steps as a leader.”

Williams finished the 2024 season with 48 catches for 865 yards and eight touchdowns, including a standout performance against Georgia with 177 receiving yards and a game-winning touchdown. The Saraland native was also a finalist for the Shaun Alexander Award, given to the nation’s top freshman.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Williams will be joined by returning teammates like Germie Bernard and newcomers Isaiah Horton, Lotzier Brooks, and Derek Meadows. DeBoer praised the receiving corps, saying, “When your best players are your best people and highest-character guys, it’s exciting what it can become.”

Alabama’s A-Day spring game is set for April 12, with the 2025 regular season kicking off Aug. 30 at Florida State. As Williams prepares for his sophomore year, his blend of talent, humor, and leadership continues to make him a standout figure in college football.
