Alcaraz Advances to Roland Garros Quarterfinals with Win Over Shelton

PARIS, France — Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning champion and world No. 2, defeated American Ben Shelton in the fourth round of Roland Garros on June 1. The Spaniard secured a hard-fought victory in four sets with scores of 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, advancing to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
At just 22 years old, Alcaraz has now reached the round of 16 for the fourth consecutive time at this Grand Slam. He entered the match with a perfect record of seven straight wins and was looking to continue his impressive performance after recently winning the Masters 1000 in Rome.
Alcaraz’s path through the initial rounds included victories over Giulio Zeppieri, Fabian Marozsan, and Damir Dzumhur, losing only one set in the process. Meanwhile, Shelton, also 22, had a notable tournament so far, eliminating top-seeded players and competing in the second Grand Slam of his career.
During the match, Alcaraz encountered stiff resistance from Shelton, particularly in the third set, which the American clinched. “I knew Ben was going to be tough,” Alcaraz said in a post-match interview. “He has a powerful serve and plays aggressively.” Alcaraz had previously defeated Shelton in two prior encounters, both without losing a set, but acknowledged the American’s growth as a player.
Looking ahead, Alcaraz will face Tommy Paul, another American, in the quarterfinals if he continues his winning ways. “I’m ready for the next challenge,” Alcaraz said. “I hope to bring my best tennis to keep advancing in this tournament.” The match showcased the resilience and talent of Alcaraz, as he seeks to defend his title in Paris.
