Aldi and Other Stores Recall Brie and Camembert Cheeses Due to Listeria Concerns
Savencia Cheese USA has initiated a voluntary recall of several types of Brie and Camembert cheeses sold in various stores, including Aldi and Market Basket, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall was announced following routine testing that indicated some equipment used in the cheese processing at Savencia’s Lena, Illinois, facility may have been contaminated with the bacteria.
The recalled cheeses include Aldi’s Emporium Selection Brie, La Bonne Vie Brie, La Bonne Vie Camembert, Industrial Brie, Market Basket Brie, and Supreme Oval. These products have a “best buy date” of December 24, 2024, and were manufactured between September 30 and October 15, 2024. The affected states include Indiana, Missouri, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Texas, Iowa, New Jersey, California, Oregon, Colorado, Washington, and Illinois.
Although finished product testing did not identify any contaminated products, the recall was initiated as a precautionary measure. Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of a listeria infection can include nausea, diarrhea, chills, fever, muscle aches, and in severe cases, convulsions, confusion, and a stiff neck.
Aldi has advised customers to discard any affected products immediately or return them to their local store for a full refund. The FDA has informed retailers to remove the products from shelves, and consumers are advised to refrain from consuming the recalled cheeses and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. As of the recall announcement, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse health effects related to the consumption of these cheeses.
