Alec Bohm’s Surge Raises Questions About Phillies Lineup

Alec Bohm Batting In Mlb

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Alec Bohm is showing signs of a turnaround after a challenging start to the 2025 MLB season. In April, he struggled significantly, hitting just .221 with a .526 OPS. Bohm had 21 strikeouts in 28 games and only three walks, prompting Phillies manager Rob Thomson to move him down in the batting order.

Since the beginning of May, however, Bohm has substantially improved his performance. In 18 games, he has raised his batting average to .333 with an .884 OPS. He has steadily begun to hit better, accumulating 10 RBIs while striking out just 11 times and walking five times.

Bohm has primarily occupied the seventh or eighth spot in the lineup since his demotion, and in those 20 games batting eighth this season, he is hitting .315 with an .828 OPS. This shift in his position appears to have benefitted his style of play, as two of his three home runs have come from the eighth spot, alongside a significant number of RBIs.

The Phillies’ batting order currently enjoys a strong lineup, featuring hitters such as Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos. Schwarber has been successful in the third or fourth position, creating a formidable presence behind Bryce Harper. Castellanos is hitting .286 with a .736 OPS, reflecting a consistent performance.

Traditionally, Bohm excelled when hitting higher up in the order, acting as protection for Harper and taking advantage of scoring opportunities. The dilemma now facing Thomson is whether to reward Bohm’s resurgence by moving him back up the lineup. However, this would disrupt the current successful arrangement.

As the team sits atop the NL East with a record of 32-18, the decision regarding Bohm’s lineup spot remains crucial. While it may seem prudent to keep all players in their current roles given the team’s success, Bohm’s rising form cannot be overlooked. Exploring a place for him among the top order could maximize run production without jeopardizing the team’s harmony.

With Bohm’s recent performance in mind, fans are left wondering if it’s time for the Phillies to reevaluate their batting strategy, potentially elevating Bohm into a higher slot as his form continues to improve.
