Dr. B.R. Ambedkar‘s indelible impact on Indian society and his relentless efforts toward social justice and equality were commemorated on his birth anniversary, celebrated on April 14 as Bhim Jayanti across India. Born in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh in 1891, Dr. Ambedkar played a pivotal role in the Constitution Drafting Committee for independent India, leaving a lasting legacy in the country’s governance.

Belonging to the Mahar caste, considered untouchable in Hinduism, Dr. Ambedkar’s conversion to Buddhism in Maharashtra‘s Nagpur marked a significant shift in his advocacy against social evils such as untouchability. His autobiographical work, ‘Waiting For A Visa’, narrates the struggles he faced due to his caste, shedding light on the realities of discrimination.

On August 29, 1947, Dr. Ambedkar assumed the chairmanship of the Constitution Drafting Committee, a historic milestone that led to the creation of the Indian Constitution. Through his writing and advocacy, he challenged societal norms, empowering Dalits and underserved communities.

Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions extended beyond the constitutional framework, encompassing the establishment of institutions like the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and his advocacy for gender equality. His ideals reshaped the narrative on caste hierarchy, advocating for the rights of marginalized communities.

As India commemorates Dr. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary this April, his legacy continues to inspire generations to uphold the principles of social justice, equality, and empowerment. Bhim Jayanti stands as a symbolic tribute to the enduring impact of his vision on the fabric of Indian society.
