Vasu Raja‘s departure as the senior vice president of strategy at American Airlines has prompted a strategic shift under the leadership of CEO Robert Isom. Raja had advocated for several ambitious plans, including a Boston hub and a partnership with JetBlue, which were disrupted by the pandemic.

One of Raja’s key strategies was implementing a new distribution capability called NDC, which aimed to drive corporate customers to book directly through the airline’s site. However, this approach failed, leading to Raja’s departure in June.

Isom, who took over as chief commercial officer in April 2022, has announced a reversal of the NDC strategy and a renewed focus on restoring corporate relationships. He emphasized the need to recapture lost ground against competitors like Delta and United.

During an investor conference, Isom acknowledged the challenges faced by American Airlines, including a recent downgrade in revenue and profit forecasts for the second quarter. The company’s shares took a hit following the announcement.

This is not the first time Isom has been at the center of an executive shakeup at American Airlines. In 2016, he replaced President Scott Kirby, who went on to become the CEO of United Airlines.

The Allied Pilots Association, representing American pilots, highlighted the need for a broader strategic overhaul beyond the failed corporate ticketing sales strategy. Isom took full responsibility for the setback and expressed a commitment to aligning the airline’s operations with market demands.

Isom’s focus on revenue generation and operational excellence has intensified following Raja’s exit. The airline faces the challenge of regaining investor confidence amidst financial uncertainties.

As Isom navigates this period of transition, industry events like the Bernstein Conference play a crucial role in shaping American Airlines’ future trajectory. The company’s performance is closely monitored within the aviation sector, as demonstrated by its inclusion in the Skift Travel 200 index.
