American Airlines Employee Killed in Ramp Accident at Charlotte Airport

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An American Airlines employee died Monday after being struck by a vehicle on the ramp at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, officials confirmed. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. near Concourse B, where emergency vehicles and baggage carts were seen responding to the scene.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the employee’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” airport officials said in a statement. The airport is collaborating with American Airlines and first responders to investigate the accident and provide support to those affected.
American Airlines expressed devastation over the incident. “We are devastated by the accident involving a team member,” the airline said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our local team members. We are focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time.”
A passenger on a nearby plane told WCNC Charlotte they witnessed the employee being struck by a vehicle. Airport officials confirmed only one vehicle was involved in the incident. Photos shared with the news outlet showed emergency vehicles and luggage carts gathered on the ramp.
Despite the tragedy, airport operations remained largely unaffected. “There are no significant impacts to operations,” officials said in an initial statement. The Federal Aviation Administration reported no substantial flight delays, though some weather-related delays were noted.
This incident follows a 2019 tragedy at the same airport, where another American Airlines employee, Kendrick Hudson, died in a similar accident. Hudson was driving a tug that hit a piece of luggage and flipped, leading to a $20,000 fine for the airline due to hazardous work conditions.
WCNC Charlotte has launched its More Than A Number initiative to honor the victim and share their story. The station invites family and friends to submit photos, memories, and details about their loved one.
