DENVER, Colo. — Doug Kiker, known as the “Singing Garbage Man” from American Idol, passed away on Monday at the age of 32. His death has raised concerns regarding his health and well-being, following an incident reported by a passerby who observed Kiker appearing unwell on a Denver street.

The woman, fearing Kiker may have been experiencing a drug overdose, called 911, prompting an emergency response. Reports indicate Kiker was subsequently transported to Denver Health Medical Center, where he succumbed to his condition five days later. Initial accounts suggest that a drug-induced heart attack may have been a contributing factor to his sudden decline, although the Denver Medical Examiner’s Office is still investigating the precise cause and manner of death.

Kiker’s sister, Angela Evans, confirmed his passing via a heartfelt post on Facebook, stating, “It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the passing of my brother. He was sooo loved and will be missed by so many! Your singing with the Angels now, Bubba. Please pray for our family as we go through this very difficult time.” Evans also noted a crowdfunding initiative had begun to assist with funeral expenses, exceeding its goal of $4,500.

Kiker, who gained notoriety on Season 18 of American Idol in 2019, had little formal experience performing prior to his audition. He famously claimed, “I don’t have any,” after judge Lionel Richie inquired about his background. Despite this, Kiker impressed the judges with his rendition of Rascal Flatts‘ “Bless the Broken Road,” moving Katy Perry to tears and earning him a Golden Ticket to Hollywood.

<p"Most notably, judges praised him for his heartfelt performance, with Richie affirming, "You’re a hell of a man," as Kiker advanced to the next stage. However, he did not progress beyond the Hollywood round after performing Marvin Gaye's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough."

On social media, Miker’s ex-fiancée, Valerie Cook, expressed her pain over the loss, sharing her heartbreak over their children’s loss of their father. Kiker’s brother also spoke out in an emotional message, saying, “Dear brother, I just want you to know that no matter where you are, you will always be my baby brother. I know you are finally at peace. I just wish I had more time with you… Rest in peace, Douglas Kiker.”

Following his appearance on American Idol, Kiker appeared to have struggled personally, as illustrated by a post from May 2022. He reflected, “We all have our moments of true struggle,” indicating he may have faced challenges beyond the public eye.

The community continues to rally around Kiker’s family during this difficult time, with numerous fans and friends expressing their condolences.
