Ben Joyce Baseball Injury Surgery

SAN DIEGO — The Los Angeles Angels announced Wednesday that right-handed pitcher Ben Joyce underwent season-ending surgery on his right shoulder. The 24-year-old Joyce, who has been on the 60-day injured list since early in the season, is expected to miss the remainder of the year.

“It sucks,” said Angels catcher Logan O’Hoppe, who lives with Joyce. “He takes care of his body better than anybody. He works harder than anybody. To see that happen is pretty heartbreaking.”

Joyce has struggled with injuries throughout his career, including inflammation in his shoulder that led to this surgery. Before this setback, he recorded a 3.12 earned run average and has the ability to throw a fastball over 100 mph.

Initially, the Angels believed Joyce’s shoulder issue was minor, with Joyce referring to his time on the injured list as a precautionary measure. However, after an MRI revealed significant inflammation, he was placed on the 60-day IL.

Angels manager Ron Washington expressed concern over losing Joyce’s skills for the season. “We could have used him,” he said. “Now we know that we don’t have that asset, at least this year.”

The Angels bullpen has struggled significantly this season, sitting tied for the worst ERA in Major League Baseball. Without Joyce, who was expected to be a key setup man, the team will look to other options such as Ryan Zeferjahn and closer Kenley Jansen.

While Joyce is sidelined, the Angels hope to adjust their strategy and look for possible reinforcements to strengthen their bullpen. Washington believes that help may be on the way as they await the return of other injured pitchers.

Despite his injury history, including having Tommy John surgery while in college, Joyce will continue to accumulate MLB service time during his recovery, with hopes of returning stronger next season.
