Ari Aster’s Eddington to Premiere at Cannes Film Festival Next Month

CANNES, France — Director Ari Aster’s highly anticipated film Eddington is set to premiere next month at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. The film, which features an ensemble cast including Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler, explores dark themes in a contemporary western setting. The official poster and a first look image were released by A24 on April 10, 2025.
Described as Aster’s “contemporary western,” Eddington follows a couple stranded in a small New Mexico town. While they are initially welcomed by the local community, the film takes a sinister turn after nightfall. Joaquin Phoenix portrays the town’s sheriff, who harbors ambitious dreams, while Pedro Pascal plays the town’s mayor embroiled in conflict.
The film also stars Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Clifton Collins Jr., and Luke Grimes. Aster, known for his previous acclaimed films Hereditary, Midsommar, and Beau Is Afraid, wrote the screenplay for Eddington, marking his sixth collaboration with A24.
Production commenced in March 2024, and the film is currently in post-production, with A24 targeting a summer release. This premiere represents a significant milestone for Aster, as Eddington will contest for the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 13 to May 24, 2025.
“Eddington delves into the themes of ambition and societal conflict amidst a western landscape, which has sparked considerable excitement among film enthusiasts,” said a representative from A24. Critics are eager to see how Aster navigates these complex themes and how the film will be received at Cannes.
The festival has released a competitive lineup, which includes other high-profile directors such as Wes Anderson and Richard Linklater. Anderson’s film The Phoenician Scheme is among those vying for awards. The full competition includes 18 films, including titles such as New Wave, which chronicles the making of Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless, and Kelly Reichardt’s art-heist drama The Mastermind.
As the premiere approaches, anticipation builds not only for Eddington but for Aster’s growing reputation in the film industry. With its unique story and stellar cast, Eddington aims to captivate audiences and critics alike, potentially solidifying Aster’s status as a leading voice in contemporary cinema.
