Arizona Cardinals Eye ASU Star Cam Skattebo for 2025 NFL Draft
GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Arizona Cardinals, armed with limited picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, face mounting pressure to make each selection count after a promising start to the 2024 season unraveled into disappointment. With roster gaps to address, the team is reportedly considering Arizona State University running back Cam Skattebo, despite already boasting depth at the position.
Skattebo, who recently completed a historic season with the Sun Devils, set a single-season rushing record with 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting and played a pivotal role in ASU’s double-overtime thriller against Texas in the Peach Bowl, their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance.
“The People’s Running Back,” as some have dubbed him, has drawn attention for his relentless work ethic and football IQ, even if he lacks the prototypical size and speed of an NFL star. “He’s simply good at football,” said one scout. “He plays with a tenacity that you don’t often see.”
The Cardinals already feature Pro Bowler James Conner, second-year standout Trey Benson, and backups Emari Demercado and Michael Carter Jr. in their running back room. Adding Skattebo would be a luxury, but one that could resonate with fans and provide long-term value. “He could be a terrific heir apparent to Conner,” said an analyst. “Or they could rotate him with Benson and Demercado to keep the backfield fresh.”
However, the Cardinals’ priority remains addressing critical needs, such as pass rush and offensive line depth. “Adding Skattebo would be popular, but they need to fix bigger issues first,” said Richie Bradz, a Cardinals analyst. “If they can shore up those areas, then Skattebo becomes a welcome addition.”
As the draft approaches, the Cardinals must weigh their options carefully. Skattebo’s potential to energize the fanbase and contribute on the field makes him an intriguing prospect, but only if the team can address its more pressing deficiencies.
