FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The fifth-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks kick off the 2025 college baseball season with a doubleheader against the Washington State Cougars at Baum-Walker Stadium, beginning at noon on Friday, February 14. This marks the first time since 2009 that Arkansas has scheduled two games on Opening Day.

Under the leadership of head coach Dave Van Horn, in his 23rd season, the Razorbacks return as the nation’s winningest program since 2017, boasting 333 overall victories. Arkansas has achieved 40 or more wins in each of the last seven complete seasons, an impressive feat that underscores their dominance in college baseball.

This season, the Razorbacks will rely on right-hander Gabe Gaeckle in the opening game. Gaeckle, a sophomore and Freshman All-American in 2024, carries a significant amount of expectation, having earned several preseason accolades, including SEC Pitcher of the Year honors from Baseball America.

“It feels great to be starting the season home,” Gaeckle said. “We’re excited to see what we can do against a strong team like Washington State.”

His counterpart on the mound for the Cougars will be Griffin Smith, a JUCO All-American making his Division I debut. Smith will look to establish his presence on the mound against a formidable Arkansas lineup.

The doubleheader against Washington State replaces a previously scheduled game on Sunday, reflecting the program’s adaptability as it navigates the season’s waning daylight in mid-February. The second game will commence approximately 30 to 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first, following a similar structure to past doubleheader protocols.

Historically, Arkansas has thrived during opening weekends, posting a remarkable 21-1 record on Opening Day under Van Horn’s tenure. Conclusively, the Razorbacks have never lost an Opening Weekend series at home in the Van Horn era, underscoring their fortress-like presence at Baum-Walker Stadium.

“Opening Day is always special,” Van Horn stated. “Our guys are ready to play, and it’s a great opportunity for us to focus on our goals.”

Fans can follow the action on SEC Network+ and listen live on the Razorback Sports Network, where the excitement of Razorback baseball will continue through the series that includes matchups on Saturday and Monday.

As both teams take to the field, weather conditions show overcast skies with a persistent south wind that will challenge hitters. Arkansas aims to claim its 700th victory in the stadium as the opening weekend unfolds, solidifying their standing within college baseball.
