Ashanti Performing Live In Hawaii

KO OLINA, Hawaii — Grammy-winning artist Ashanti captivated audiences Sunday during a live performance for the iconic singing competition, American Idol. The performance at Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa, marked the beginning of nationwide voting for season 23’s Top 24 contestants.

During the event, Ashanti delivered stunning renditions of her hits “The Way That I Love You” and “Foolish,” both of which resonated with the audience as she reflected on her own experience within the music industry. The artist is serving as a mentor for the current season, offering guidance to aspiring singers on the show.

“I’ve been impressed by all of their stories, all of their passion, and where they come from — the talent is just through the roof, and they have a purpose,” Ashanti expressed in a conversation with host Ryan Seacrest.

The episode, airing April 13 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, includes a preview of Ashanti’s heartfelt discussion with the contestants about their musical journeys and aspirations. Additionally, she teased the premiere of her upcoming single “Called You Up,” accompanied by a music video filmed in Bermuda. “It’s amazing, and I can’t wait for you guys to see it,” she shared with the excited crowd.

Ashanti, now 44, emerged on the music scene in 2002 and made history by being the first female artist to occupy the top two slots on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously. Since her debut, she has released six studio albums, the last being Braveheart in 2014. “I’m just so happy and proud of all the contestants,” she said.

This season, viewers have the power to determine the fate of the contestants through voting methods introduced by the show. The Top 24 have had the unique opportunity to perform in Hawaii, a tradition that began in prior seasons. Executive producer Megan Michaels Wolflick explained that this celebratory round allows for an engaging atmosphere, making the performances particularly memorable.

Ashanti is currently on tour with Sean Paul and Fat Joe for the Bring It Tour across the United Kingdom and Ireland. As she shares her insights, she aims to inspire the contestants navigating their own journeys.

In addition to Ashanti, this week’s mentors include Josh Groban and Jelly Roll, who offer their expertise to the budding artists. The collaborative efforts emphasize the importance of mentorship, especially for those competing for a chance at a life-changing opportunity.

As the contestants prepare to showcase their talents, Ashanti’s encouragement and participation highlight the enduring legacy of American Idol in fostering musical careers. The output of this collaborative spirit is anticipated to elevate the performances in the crucial phase of the competition.

Stay tuned for more captivating performances and drama from the Top 24 as American Idol continues its season.
