Astros Outfielder Melton Contract News

HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Astros are preparing to select the contract of outfielder Drew Melton, according to a recent report. While the specifics of a corresponding roster move are not yet known, the team will need to make room on both the 40-man and active rosters to promote Melton.

Melton, 24, was the Astros’ second-round pick in the 2022 draft and is currently rated as the club’s second-best prospect. Following the graduation of fellow prospect Hunter Brown earlier this month, Melton became the team’s top prospect. Scouts have noted that while he has average offensive skills, he possesses above-average raw power and solid bat-to-ball skills. However, concerns about his aggressive approach could limit his offensive potential.

Despite these flaws, Melton has had success in the minor leagues. In 17 games at Triple-A this season, he has maintained an impressive batting line of .254/.371/.508. This translates to a 132 wRC+, even in the high-scoring Pacific Coast League.

Given his solid performance, the Astros have decided to promote Melton to the big leagues, especially given the current lineup issues. Since Chas McCormick went on the injured list in late April, Houston has lacked a regular left-handed batter. Center fielder Jake Meyers remains the only true outfielder on the roster.

Furthermore, the team has had to adjust its infielders; second baseman Jose Altuve, along with other players, has split time between the outfield and other positions. Dezenzo left today’s game with “left hand discomfort” and is scheduled for imaging, leading to further uncertainty in the lineup.

Bringing Melton into the fold offers the Astros a needed left-handed bat as they navigate their current roster challenges.
