Atlético-MG and Cruzeiro Fans Unite in Harmony Ahead of Florida Clásico
ORLANDO, Fla. — Atlético-MG and Cruzeiro fans gathered in a rare display of camaraderie Saturday ahead of their teams’ second international clásico at Inter&Co Stadium. The match, part of the FC Series, drew thousands of supporters who shared churrasco, music, and team chants in a festive atmosphere.
Despite the historic rivalry between the Brazilian clubs, fans of both teams mingled peacefully in the parking lots surrounding the stadium. Groups of atleticanos and cruzeirenses set up grills, played Brazilian music, and sang club anthems while awaiting the gates to open. The scene was a stark contrast to the often tense encounters between the two fan bases in Brazil.
“It’s amazing to see everyone getting along,” said Laura Rezende, a journalist covering the event. “The atmosphere is more like a celebration than a rivalry.”
Security was tight in the Parramore neighborhood, one of Orlando‘s most challenging areas, with barricades and metal detectors controlling access to the stadium. Police presence was significantly higher than during recent matches in Brazil, but no incidents were reported.
The match, scheduled for 5 p.m. Brasília time, marks Atlético-MG’s first game of the 2025 season. Cruzeiro, meanwhile, comes into the match after a 1-1 draw with São Paulo earlier in the week. Both teams are expected to field experimental lineups ahead of their Campeonato Mineiro openers on Sunday.
At the stadium, fans will be segregated behind the goals, with a mixed section in between. Organizers expect to break the attendance record for a foreign team match at the venue, with over 20,000 fans anticipated.
The FC Series, formerly known as the Florida Cup, has become a popular preseason destination for Brazilian clubs. This year’s edition features several high-profile matches, including Saturday’s clash between two of Brazil’s most storied rivals.
For Atlético-MG, the match offers a chance to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season that saw the team fall short in both the Copa do Brasil and Copa Libertadores finals. New signings Gabriel Menino, Patrick, and Natanael could make their debuts under coach Cuca.
Cruzeiro, meanwhile, looks to build on its recent form as it prepares for another season in Brazil’s top flight. The club has been active in the transfer market, bringing in several new players to bolster its squad.
The match will be broadcast on multiple platforms, including Globo Minas, Band, sportv, and various YouTube channels, ensuring fans around the world can tune in to this unique international encounter.
