Aubrey Modiba Thrives in Versatile Role for Mamelodi Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns fullback Aubrey Modiba has asserted that he is willing to play in any position within the team, expressing his comfort and versatility.
In a recent match during the MTN8 quarterfinal against Polokwane City, Modiba was utilized in the middle of the field, specifically in the No. 8 position, alongside teammate Marcello Allende. As Sundowns prepares for their upcoming MTN8 semifinal first leg against Stellenbosch at Lucas Moripe Stadium, Modiba is anticipated to take on the same midfield role.
Modiba shared his familiarity with this position, stating, “I’m familiar with the role. In the games that we played in the African Football League (AFL), I played that role as an eight.” He indicated that this is not an unfamiliar position for him and expressed his readiness to contribute effectively if the coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, continues to place him in midfield.
He further elaborated, “As an inverted full-back, I used to overload in the midfield. I think I’ve done well, and the coach thinks I can help the team in that role. I am prepared and learning every day about the role. Hopefully, I can be better and help the team as much as I can. I’m enjoying the role.”
Modiba acknowledged the recent changes in the team’s playing style, emphasizing the importance of adapting to the new philosophy introduced by the technical team. “Credit must go to the technical team because the new philosophy is going to help the team going forward,” he stated.
He also mentioned the initial challenges faced following the style change, admitting, “When that change came and the coach said we are going to play like this season, at first we were not sure how it was going to work out.” However, with continuous learning and practice, he has begun to grasp the role better with the support of his coaches.
Modiba concluded by highlighting the significance of the learning process, stating that understanding his role more thoroughly involves research, viewing videos, and observing players who utilize a similar playing style.
