Aubrey Plaza’s Husband Jeff Baena Found Dead After Months of Separation

LOS ANGELES, March 19, 2025 — Actress Aubrey Plaza‘s husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, was found dead in his home on January 3, 2025. According to a report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the couple had been separated since September 2024, just months before his tragic death at age 47.
Officers were called to the residence after Baena’s dog walker discovered his body hanging from a staircase. The dog walker reported that she had heard loud music coming from inside the house, which was unusual, prompting her to investigate. The report indicated that Baena was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:39 a.m.
The Medical Examiner ruled Baena’s cause of death as suicide, confirming that no drugs or alcohol were found in his system, and no suicide note was present at the scene. Reports also noted that there were no previous suicide attempts, although Baena had a history of insomnia.
Aubrey Plaza, who had moved to New York during their separation, reportedly spoke with Baena the night before his death. Police sources said she had expressed concern for his well-being following concerning remarks made by Baena in October 2024, leading her to arrange a welfare check through a friend at that time.
Plaza, 40, publicly shared her affection for Baena on social media, referring to him as her “darling husband” after their marriage in 2021. The couple starred together in the popular television series “Parks and Recreation” before keeping their wedding largely private.
Before his untimely death, Baena had a successful career, co-writing the acclaimed film “I Heart Huckabees” and directing projects like “Life After Beth.” He received recognition at the Sundance Film Festival for multiple projects, including “Life After Beth,” which starred Plaza.
In a statement released following his death, Plaza’s representative expressed gratitude for the support received and requested privacy as she navigates this personal tragedy. “This is an unimaginable tragedy,” the statement read.
Baena was born and raised in Miami, eventually moving to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the film industry. He worked various positions, including production assistant and assistant editor, before making his mark as a writer and director.
The community and fans of both Plaza and Baena are mourning the loss of a talented filmmaker, as the latest news continues to unfold surrounding this tragic event.
