AUBURN, Ala. – No. 22 Auburn will face a significant test when they take on top-ranked Houston on Sunday at Legacy Arena in Birmingham.

Auburn’s coach, Steven Pearl, emphasized the importance of the matchup, describing it as “an incredible opportunity playing the No. 1 team in the country.” The Tigers, currently undefeated with a record of 3-0, have averaged an impressive 94.3 points per game in their earlier matches against Bethune-Cookman, Merrimack, and Wofford.

However, the challenge against Houston will be much steeper. “It’s about six or seven steps up when you play a program like Houston,” Pearl said. Known for their strong defense, the Cougars are recognized as one of the best teams in college basketball over the last decade.

Houston coach Kelvin Sampson expressed eagerness about seeing how his team performs away from home. “Everybody at some point is going to have to play a road game,” he said. Sampson has built a strong team that has posted significant wins against Lehigh, Towson, and Oakland this season.

The Cougars are led by Emanuel Sharp, who is averaging 17.3 points per game. Also standing out are Kingston Flemings and Joseph Tugler, contributing vital scoring and defensive efforts. The team aims to maintain its momentum as they attempt to win their first game away from home.

Auburn’s Keyshawn Hall, a standout player who scored 21 points in last year’s win over Houston, has high hopes for his team. “I feel like we can compete with anybody,” Hall stated. He leads his team with an average of 24.3 points and 11 rebounds per game, underlining Auburn’s strong rebounding game that has elevated them so far.

With both teams coming into the game undefeated, fans can anticipate a thrilling match-up that promises intensity and high stakes on the court. The game is set to tip-off at 2 p.m. CT and will be broadcasted on ESPN and the Auburn Sports Network, with Andy Burcham and Randall Dickey on the call.
