CONCORD, N.C. — Avelo Airlines celebrated the official launch of its new base at Charlotte Concord-Padgett Regional Airport on March 6, with the promise of creating 50 new jobs in the region for flight crews, ticketing personnel, and aircraft mechanics.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony showcased Avelo’s commitment to expanding its operations in North Carolina, which was initially announced in December. With the new base, Avelo will station two Boeing 737 aircraft in Concord, offering convenient access to its services for local passengers.

“A base here means local job growth and even more affordable, convenient, and reliable service for the region,” said Trevor Yealy, a spokesperson for Avelo Airlines.

Jim Olson, Avelo’s head of marketing, emphasized in a December interview the importance of the local jobs, stating, “These are high-quality jobs. They’re pilots, flight attendants, airport customer service and aircraft technician jobs.”

Dirk Vanderleest, the aviation director for the city of Concord, praised Avelo for navigating challenges during the pandemic and for its growth since launching last May. Avelo Airlines has adjusted its flight schedules to adapt to evolving passenger demand.

The establishment of a base in Concord will enhance the airline’s service offerings, including the introduction of new routes. Starting in April, Avelo will begin twice-weekly flights to Daytona Beach, Florida, and Nashville, Tennessee, expanding the choices available for travelers.

In addition to these new routes, Avelo announced the discontinuation of flights between Concord and Bradley International Airport near Hartford, Conn., effective March 30. The airline cited the consolidation of its domestic services to Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) as the reason for this change. However, Avelo will maintain its international service at Bradley International Airport.

Following the route adjustments, here are the destinations served by Avelo from Concord: Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in New Hampshire, Lakeland Linder International Airport in Florida, Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport in New York, Daytona Beach International Airport in Florida, and Nashville International Airport in Tennessee.

Avelo Airlines’ new base in Concord is part of its strategic initiative to target secondary airports near metropolitan areas. The company has successfully navigated expansion plans since launching its service during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since launching operations in April 2021, Avelo has expanded its network to include 53 cities in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, with a growing international presence in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Mexico. The airline aims to operate a total of seven routes from its Concord location as it continues to focus on underserved markets.
