RJ Barrett Shines in Raptors’ Recent Victory Over Nets
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — RJ Barrett has been a key player for the Toronto Raptors as they strive for success this season. On Tuesday, Barrett helped lead the Raptors to a 119-109 win against the Brooklyn Nets, contributing 13 points and a team-high six assists.
Despite facing tough defenders, including his teammate Brandon Ingram, Barrett remains focused on his game. He acknowledged that most teams lack five strong defenders, but the Oklahoma City Thunder could pose a challenge with their depth on defense. The Raptors will not face the Thunder until January 25.
Barrett’s performance has been steady throughout the season, with averages of 20 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. He is shooting 51.3 percent from the field, a significant improvement considering he has never shot better than 49.5 percent in a season. “I think I play with a little bit of a different passion,” he said, referencing his roots in Mississauga, Ontario, just outside of Toronto.
Ingram’s arrival has adjusted Barrett’s role, resulting in a dip in his usage rate. However, Barrett does not rely on plays being called for him; instead, he finds ways to contribute effectively, capitalizing on opportunities as they arise. Teammate Garrett Temple praised Barrett’s ability to score without needing specific plays designed for him.
The Raptors have started the season with a record of 6-5, and Barrett has shown he can adapt to his changing role. His decision-making on the court has played a crucial role in supporting the team’s offense, particularly with Ingram’s presence to draw defensive focus.
Barrett faced struggles against the Nets, particularly with his outside shooting, going 0-for-7 from three-point range. However, he managed to make an impact in the final minutes by grabbing an offensive rebound for a putback and drawing a charge.
Despite not receiving an offseason extension, Barrett has remained focused, understanding that his performance on the court is his best chance for future security with the Raptors. As they navigate the season, Barrett’s adaptability and commitment will be vital to the team’s success.
