Bay Area Cafes Ramadan Iftar Coffee Shops

San Francisco, California — As Ramadan begins in the San Francisco Bay Area, local cafes are gearing up to welcome the community with extended hours and culturally-inspired offerings. This year, Ramadan runs from February 28 to March 29, providing an invitation for friends and families to gather for evening meals post-fasting.

In response to the increased demand for late-night social spaces, several Arab, South Asian, and Muslim-owned cafes are scheduled to extend their hours, accommodating those participating in iftar—the evening meal that breaks the fast during Ramadan. “It’s reassuring to know we can find warmth and energy in our local cafes during this time,” said one local patron.

Cafes like Delah, which originated in San Francisco in 2022, have become local staples for both work sessions and leisure. Known for its warm decor and welcoming atmosphere, Delah’s offerings such as the strong, sweet Yemeni latte and rose milk cake have gained popularity among community members. This location will stay open until midnight throughout Ramadan to serve its customers.

Another newcomer, Elaichi Co, opened its doors near UC Berkeley in January 2024. This café has already made a name for itself with inventive chai options and a commitment to supporting local artists through community events. With its extended hours from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends, it serves as an essential spot for creativity and connection in the community.

Kenz Coffee Bar, operating since 2018 and located in Los Gatos, is also gearing up for Ramadan by partnering with local food vendors for specialty events. Highlights from its menu include a pumped-up pistachio latte and rose chai, reflecting the flavors of its diverse clientele.

Qamaria, a Yemeni café that has franchises in Fremont and Sacramento, continues to attract crowds with its unique offerings, including a decadent knafeh cheesecake and iced pistachio lattes. Its Fremont location will open until 2 a.m. on weekends to cater to the late-night crowd during Ramadan.

Moreover, the newly opened Sana’a Café in Mountain View is making waves with its enchanting Sana’a latte and rich pistachio cheesecake. By collaborating with local food vendors this Ramadan, Sana’a hopes to establish itself as a go-to destination for celebratory meals.

This surge in café popularity illustrates how Bay Area establishments are increasingly becoming central to community bonding, especially during significant cultural observances like Ramadan. Organizers and activists advocate for the enrichment of the community by hosting events at these cafés, fostering a sense of belonging and connection among patrons.

The Bay Area’s culinary landscape not only supports Muslim communities by providing spaces that cater to their unique dietary and social preferences but also reflects a growing appreciation for diverse cultural heritages. As Ramadan progresses, these establishments aim to strengthen community ties while offering delectable culinary experiences.

With the spirit of Ramadan alive and thriving, local cafés are taking innovative steps to ensure that everyone can partake in the richness of this sacred month. As patrons gather for delightful beverages and meals post-Iftar, a sense of unity and celebration fills the atmosphere across the Bay Area.
