Khalil Herbert Indianapolis Colts Free Agency Contract

CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Cincinnati Bengals are making adjustments as free agency unfolds, losing running back Khalil Herbert to the Indianapolis Colts. Herbert, who was acquired in a rare in-season trade last November, has signed a one-year contract with the Colts, according to NFL Network.

At just 26 years old, there was a possibility for the Bengals to retain Herbert for added depth in their backfield. However, the team has opted to move forward with Chase Brown and Samaje Perine as their primary running backs, with Zack Moss‘s injury status still uncertain.

Herbert joined the Bengals from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick, showcasing his potential during his short stint in Cincinnati. Despite the opportunity for extended playtime, the Bengals cited a desire to streamline their roster heading into the 2025 season.

Recent reports indicate that the Bengals are focusing on strengthening their depth at key positions, including running back and the offensive line, as they aim to maintain competitiveness in the AFC North.

“We are looking to keep our core intact while making essential upgrades,” said Bengals head coach Zac Taylor. “The upcoming free agency period is crucial, and we have decisions to make that will guide us towards our goals.”

As free agency is set to officially open on March 12, teams will be busy negotiating with players. The Bengals currently have $62 million in salary cap space, which positions them to make significant moves in the coming weeks.

Expectations around the league suggest a surge of activity as teams vie for impact players, particularly within the pass-rushing and offensive line sectors. Resources will be utilized in pursuit of high-caliber talents.

NFL analyst Dan Graziano noted, “With so few elite quarterback prospects available in the upcoming draft, free agency this year could be pivotal for teams needing immediate upgrades.”

In the wake of Herbert’s departure, Cincinnati faces a challenge as they work to enhance their roster while managing salary cap considerations and overall team dynamics. The next few weeks will be critical for the Bengals to finalize strategies that could make or break their upcoming season.
