Blues Offer Sheets To Oilers Stars

The St. Louis Blues have made a strategic move in the NHL by tendering offer sheets to two promising players from the Edmonton Oilers, defenceman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway. This bold move is coming right after the Blues missed the playoffs last season.

Broberg, who played alongside Darnell Nurse during the playoffs, has been offered a two-year contract worth $4.58 million per season. Meanwhile, Holloway, who scored five goals in the playoffs, received a two-year deal at $2.29 million annually.

Now, the Oilers have just a week to decide if they want to match these offers or let both players go. If they choose not to match, the Oilers will receive a second-round pick for Broberg and a third-round pick for Holloway as compensation.

With the Oilers currently over the salary cap by a small margin, they’ll have to make tough decisions to possibly keep one of their young stars. Options include putting winger Evander Kane on long-term injury reserve to free up some cap space.

St. Louis has a healthy amount of cap space, over $7 million, allowing them to comfortably add both players from Edmonton if the Oilers cannot match. This situation has historical echoes, as the Oilers notoriously tendered offer sheets in the past, including a famous one for Dustin Penner.

Broberg, drafted eighth overall in 2019, showed potential in the playoffs, netting two goals and one assist. Holloway, also a first-round pick from 2020, contributed six goals and three assists last season, making him an essential part of Edmonton’s strategy moving forward.
