BlueSky Faces Technical Challenges Amid Influx of New Users
The social media platform BlueSky is reportedly experiencing technical difficulties following an unexpected surge in new users. This development comes in the wake of recent changes made by the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, which has prompted a significant user migration.
BlueSky encountered problems as more than 100,000 new members signed up. These issues include difficulties with accessing the platform and logging in, as highlighted by reports on the website Down Detector. The platform’s official account had previously celebrated the influx of new users, exclaiming, “welcome to the 100k+ people who have joined Bluesky in the last 12 hours!!!” However, it appears the sudden increase has overwhelmed the system.
X has recently removed the option for users to hide their profiles from specific accounts, a decision made by its owner Elon Musk. Musk has expressed that the existing functionality of the block button “makes no sense” and has proposed its removal. This decision has sparked criticism, with some arguing that eliminating the block button could expose users, particularly women, to potential harassment and abuse.
In response to these changes, BlueSky has emphasized its commitment to user safety via its account. “At BlueSky, we take online safety seriously,” it stated. “If you want to block someone, you can! It’s your experience to customize.”
The platform’s handling of the current situation will be scrutinized as it attempts to balance accommodating new users while maintaining service quality. Discussions about online safety and user experience customization continue to be a focal point for both BlueSky and its competitors.
