Bret Boone Aaron Boone Baseball Rivalry

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Bret and Aaron Boone will go head-to-head this week as the Texas Rangers face the New York Yankees in a historic matchup. It marks the first time in baseball history that three generations of the Boone family have played major league baseball, and their competitive spirit is sure to ignite the games.

Bret Boone, 56, recently appointed hitting coach for the Rangers, will be in the visiting dugout. His younger brother, Aaron Boone, 52, is entering his eighth season as manager of the Yankees. The two brothers have a long-standing history that dates back to their days playing in the majors, where they often faced off against each other.

<p“I think it’s going to be a little fun, a little weird,” Aaron said about the upcoming games. Their competitive drives will be on full display, reminiscent of their memorable clash on May 11, 2000, when Aaron hit a walk-off homer and Bret had two homers for the Padres.

<p“In the past, I wanted to beat him, but I also found a little joy if he did well as long as we won,” Bret admitted. The family’s deep-rooted connection to baseball goes back to their grandfather, Ray Boone, who played in the majors from 1948 to 1960. Their father, Bob Boone, is among the all-time great catchers.

<pThe next generation of Boones also carries the baseball legacy forward, with Bret's son Jacob involved in MLB's player programs and Aaron’s son Brandon assisting with the University of North Carolina‘s football team.

<pWhen asked whom she would root for in the series, Bret’s daughter Savannah said, “I’m pulling for both, but I’ve got to side with my dad at the end of the day.”

<pBret’s journey back into baseball has been unexpected. Just weeks ago, he wasn’t on the lookout for a coaching position. However, a chance encounter with Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy reignited his passion for the game. “I was just hanging out with my dog on the beach,” Bret recalled about the moment Bochy called him.

<pThe family is abuzz with excitement, and the stories from the baseball field continue to unfold. Bret noted, “When you’re on the outside looking in, it’s easy to talk to Aaron off the ledge. But now I know what he’s feeling.” With the emotional stakes high, both brothers are eager to face off.

<p“We’re going to want to win, but we’ll also be cheering each other on,” Bret said. The Battle of the Boones has begun, and the world of baseball is watching closely.
