HOLLYWOOD, CA — Disney’s animated film Lilo & Stitch continues to perform well in its second weekend, projected to earn $60 million, marking a 59% drop from its opening weekend. The film is showing at 4,410 locations and is expected to accumulate a total of $277 million by Sunday.

Meanwhile, Sony’s new release, Karate Kid: Legends, is anticipated to open below expectations with a $20 million debut after making between $7 million to $8 million on Friday, which included previews. This places it third behind Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning, which earned $7.7 million last Friday and a projected $27.3 million in its second weekend, a decline of 57% at 3,861 theaters.

Karate Kid: Legends stars Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan and showcases a blend of old and new characters, along with a nod to the Cobra Kai series. Critics have rated the film at 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 67% for the 2010 version. Audience ratings show 68% would recommend the film, with 83% approval from parents.

The latest installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise is projected to bring its total earnings to approximately $122.6 million. It has benefited from great audience reception, particularly following a 7.5-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival.

In addition, A24’s horror film Bring Her Back has also entered the box office fray, earning $850,000 in previews. This adds to A24’s strong history, as their films have garnered positive audience feedback in the past.

As Disney’s Lilo & Stitch concludes its first week with $217 million, it’s falling behind previous animated hits such as Inside Out 2 and Moana 2 in early performance metrics.

Industry analysts are optimistic that Saturday’s numbers could see an uptick for both Lilo & Stitch and Karate Kid: Legends as family audiences head out to enjoy the holiday weekend.
