WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University guard Braden Smith officially announced on social media Monday that he will return for his senior season with the Boilermakers. His announcement was met with enthusiasm as he expressed gratitude for the support he has received during his college career.

“Running it back one last time,” Smith wrote. “Purdue has given me everything: memories, challenges, growth and a family. There’s still more to prove, more to accomplish, and more moments to create with my brothers. Much love to my guys and Boiler Nation. Let’s make this next year unforgettable.”

Smith’s decision to stay was widely anticipated, adding excitement to an already promising season ahead for Purdue. His return solidifies the Boilermakers’ position as a frontrunner to win the Big Ten Championship and as a serious contender for the national title in 2026.

In the 2024-25 season, Smith was a standout performer, earning accolades such as the Big Ten Player of the Year and the Bob Cousy Award, which is awarded to the top point guard in college basketball. He also finished as a finalist for the prestigious Naismith National Player of the Year award, averaging 15.8 points, 8.7 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game.

Throughout his time at Purdue, Smith amassed over 1,000 career points, over 500 rebounds, and established himself as the all-time assist leader for the Boilermakers. His contributions helped the team secure two Big Ten regular-season titles, one Big Ten Tournament championship, and reach the National Championship Game.

Although Smith had the option to declare for the NBA Draft post-season while retaining his college eligibility, he has put any speculation to rest. With his commitment to return, Smith aims to lead his team to new heights during his final collegiate year.

Smith will be joined by returning starters Trey Kaufman-Renn, Fletcher Loyer, and CJ Cox, alongside Gicarri Harris and Raleigh Burgess. Additionally, 7-foot-4 center Daniel Jacobsen is back from injury. Purdue also welcomes Oscar Cluff, a transfer from South Dakota State, who averaged 17.6 points and 12.3 rebounds last season.

Smith’s return is seen as a pivotal move for Purdue’s aspirations, significantly enhancing the team’s chances for another deep run in the NCAA tournament. In other updates, Purdue has reportedly reached out to former North Carolina guard Cade Tyson, who recently entered the transfer portal. Additionally, members of the John Wooden Award praised Smith for his performance, while center Will Berg thanked Purdue and fans as he entered the NCAA transfer portal. Jacobsen confirmed his return for the 2025-26 season after recovering from a leg injury that sidelined him for most of last season.

With these developments, the Boilermakers are set for an exciting 2025-26 season, further bolstered by Smith’s leadership and experience.
