Braves’ Jose Perdomo Faces Challenges After Injuries in 2025 Season
ATLANTA, Georgia — Jose Perdomo, the Atlanta Braves‘ prized international free agent signing in 2024, is struggling to meet the lofty expectations placed upon him after a challenging 2025 season. Signed for nearly the entire international bonus pool at $5 million, Perdomo had high hopes for his career this year, but an unfortunate series of events has slowed his progress.
After a disappointing debut season in 2024 limited by a hamstring injury, Perdomo was eager to prove himself in 2025. However, he struggled mightily, ending the year with a batting average of just .223, alongside a slugging percentage of .270 over 54 games. While his strikeout rate was decent at 19.3%, his on-base percentage lingered below .300. These numbers indicate difficulties making effective contact.
During the season, he recorded a ground ball percentage of 54.3% and a line drive rate that fell to just 14%. Scouts and fans expressed their disappointment, noting that with his pedigree and the early comparisons to Miguel Cabrera, a 69 weighted runs created plus (wRC+) was underwhelming, particularly in a complex league laden with fastball pitchers.
Despite these challenges, there were glimmers of positivity. Perdomo’s health allowed him to participate in a full season, a significant improvement over 2024, and he maintained a solid strikeout rate. However, he remained in complex ball for the entire year, which disappointed many, especially given his lack of power shown through his .270 slugging percentage.
As the Braves look toward 2026, pressure mounts on Perdomo. It is likely he will start the season in the complex league again, as his performance did not warrant a promotion. However, with his age at just 19, there are hopes that he will begin to showcase the skills that justified his substantial signing bonus.
