Brewers Promote Craig Yoho Amid Pitching Challenges

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — The Milwaukee Brewers have officially promoted right-hander Craig Yoho from Triple-A Nashville, seeking to bolster a struggling bullpen that ranks 26th in Major League Baseball with an ERA of 5.54. Yoho, a former eighth-round draft pick in 2023, has excelled this season, tossing 9 2/3 scoreless innings in eight appearances.
This move comes as the Brewers navigate roster adjustments, prompted by the recent transfer of left-hander Nestor Cortes to the 60-day injured list. Cortes has been sidelined since early April due to a flexor strain in his throwing elbow, and he will not be eligible to return until June at the earliest.
At just 25 years old, Yoho has risen through the ranks after overcoming significant injuries, including two Tommy John surgeries and knee surgery. Despite a limited college career, where he pitched only 37 innings while also playing as a position player, Yoho’s recent performances have drawn attention. Last season, he transitioned from High-A to Double-A to Triple-A, culminating in a remarkable 0.94 earned run average over 57 2/3 innings, alongside a 42.4% strikeout rate.
Baseball America ranks him as the #15 prospect in the Brewers’ system, highlighting his changeup as his standout pitch, complemented by a fastball that ranges from 91 to 94 mph. His early 2025 season has shown continued promise, as he has yet to allow an earned run in Triple-A, where he has maintained a strong ground ball rate.
“We need to see if his stuff translates to big league hitters,” said Brewers Manager Craig Counsell. “Craig has put in the work, and we’re looking forward to his contributions.”
The selection of Yoho signifies a strategic shift for the Brewers as they not only aim to solidify their pitching depth but also to integrate young talent into their roster for a better future. The franchise has historically benefited from identifying unexpected stars and developing them into key contributors.
As the Brewers face pitching challenges, including recent struggles from their bullpen, Yoho’s integration into the active roster could be crucial for immediate relief. His arrival is viewed as a potential turning point for Milwaukee’s pitching strategy moving forward.
Yoho’s performance will be closely monitored as he embarks on this new phase of his career. If he continues to excel, he could cement his place in the Brewers’ rotation and help revitalize a bullpen in search of stability.
