Brewers Smash Stolen Bases Record in Commanding Win Over Athletics

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers shattered a franchise record for stolen bases in a game on Sunday, achieving nine steals against the Oakland Athletics in just four innings. This historic performance marked the first time since 1992 that the Brewers exceeded their previous record of eight stolen bases in a game.
Among the nine stolen bases, an astounding six occurred in the first inning. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, those six steals are the most recorded by a team in a single inning since the expansion era began in 1961. Prior to this, no team had accomplished six steals in an inning since the New York Giants did so in 1919.
The Brewers contributed to their record-breaking total with a focus on aggressive base running. Brice Turang led the way with three stolen bases, while Sal Frelick and Caleb Durbin each added two of their own. Durbin’s first career stolen base in the fourth inning sealed the deal on the new franchise record, following an initial call that was overturned by a video review.
In the explosive first inning, the Brewers capitalized on two hits, six stolen bases, a balk from Athletics pitcher Jeffrey Springs, and two throwing errors by catcher Shea Langeliers. This culminated in a four-run inning that established an early lead of 4-0.
The inning’s two double steals exemplified the Brewers’ aggressive strategy, contributing significantly to the score. Rhys Hoskins executed one of the double steals alongside William Contreras, further adding to the chaos on the base paths. Later in the inning, Frelick walked and took second base without a pitch as Langeliers’ throw went into center field, allowing Hoskins to score from third.
Turang eventually scored twice in the game while also executing crucial base steals. Milwaukee’s aggressive offense continued throughout the game, resulting in a resounding 14-1 victory against the Athletics. Rhys Hoskins contributed significantly with three hits, including a home run, driving in four runs.
Milwaukee rookie Logan Henderson made an impressive debut, earning his first major league win with six innings of solid pitching. He allowed just one run on three hits, featuring a home run by Oakland’s Seth Brown in the fifth inning. Meanwhile, Tyler Alexander pitched three shutout innings for his first career save.
The Brewers finished this homestand with a record of 4-2 before embarking on a challenging 10-game road trip, utilizing their newfound momentum from this record-breaking performance.
