The key distinction explained in the latest episode of the Orange and Brown Talk podcast is that being the No. 2 quarterback on game day is not the same as being a long-term starter. Host Dan Labbe stated, “The No. 2 quarterback is the guy who’s going to be ready to go in and play, even if it’s for two plays.” This emphasizes that the backup must be prepared to execute the game plan created for the starter.

Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot added that the backup quarterback needs to follow the game plan practiced all week, which complicates the choice between Zappe, who has prior NFL experience, and Sanders, a rookie. Zappe has played in nine NFL games and has a previous win against the Steelers, while Sanders is still developing.
