Bryson Stott Returns to Leadoff Spot for Phillies

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Bryson Stott returned to the starting lineup for the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, May 17, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Stott, who had sat out the previous game, was back in his familiar leadoff position, batting first and playing second base for manager Rob Thomson.
Stott has remained at the top of the order primarily against right-handed pitchers. Manager Rob Thomson made the decision after a suggestion from hitting coach Kevin Long during a late-night flight following an 11-inning loss in Atlanta on April 10. Long asked Thomson if he would consider putting Stott in the leadoff role, to which Thomson agreed.
Since taking over the leadoff role, Stott has performed well, boasting a .455 on-base percentage in his first at-bat of games, achieving 10 hits and three walks. He leads the league with 4.53 pitches seen per plate appearance, making him a valuable asset at the top of the order.
“He sets the tone, just with his plate discipline and seeing pitches,” Thomson said. “He’s been getting on base, which is good.” Stott’s approach at the plate has positively influenced the rest of the lineup, encouraging his teammates to be more disciplined.
Though Stott’s on-base percentage sits at .327 overall, his recent results show promise given the larger sample sizes. Thomson, while pleased with Stott’s performance, has yet to commit to him as a permanent leadoff hitter but is reluctant to change something that’s working.
Stott’s contributions also complement teammate Kyle Schwarber, who has entered games on a 45-game on-base streak, ranked fourth in Phillies history. Schwarber expressed a focus on getting on base and driving in runners.
The Phillies have been averaging 5.9 runs per game over their last 13 contests, showcasing the impact of their current batting configuration. The team looks to continue this momentum as they prepare to face the St. Louis Cardinals in an upcoming series.
