BYU Basketball Seeks Redemption in Road Game Against TCU
PROVO, Utah — After a disappointing 1-2 start in Big 12 play, BYU basketball is focusing on improving its shooting as it prepares for a critical road game against TCU on Saturday. The Cougars (10-4, 1-2) are coming off a loss to Texas Tech, where poor shooting, including a 12-of-21 performance from the free-throw line, proved costly.
Head coach Kevin Young emphasized the need for better execution, particularly in shooting, during practices this week. “We got a team full of really good shooters,” Young said. “But more than the 3-point shooting was the free-throw shooting. You gotta be able to knock free throws down in close games.”
BYU struggled from beyond the arc against Texas Tech, shooting just 21.7% (5 of 23). Despite the setback, Young remains confident in his team’s ability to bounce back. “My confidence level is extremely high,” he said. “We have a locker room full of great guys who want to do the right thing.”
TCU (8-6, 1-2) presents a formidable challenge, especially at home. The Horned Frogs are undefeated at Schollmaier Arena this season and rank 20th nationally in defending the 3-pointer, holding opponents to 28.5% shooting from deep. BYU, meanwhile, ranks 98th in 3-point shooting at 35.4%.
The Cougars will rely on point guards Dallin Hall and Egor Demin to lead the charge. Hall acknowledged the team’s recent struggles but remains optimistic. “The shots will eventually fall,” he said. “In the meantime, we need to focus on defense, rebounding, and execution.”
Historically, BYU has dominated the series against TCU, winning 17 consecutive matchups. However, the Frogs’ home-court advantage and strong defensive play make this a pivotal game for both teams. A win would provide BYU with a Quad 1 victory, crucial for NCAA Tournament consideration.
Tip-off is set for noon MST at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and BYU Radio.
