Cade Horton Cubs Debut

CHICAGO, IL — The Chicago Cubs are preparing for a significant change in their starting rotation as Cade Horton is set to make his major-league debut this Saturday against the New York Mets. Horton, widely regarded as the Cubs’ top pitching prospect, will fill the void left by Shota Imanaga, who was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a strained left hamstring.

Manager Craig Counsell confirmed that Horton is “an option” to replace Imanaga, indicating that after months of speculation, the organization is ready to promote the 2022 seventh overall draft pick. Horton has proved his readiness through impressive performances with the Iowa Cubs, boasting a 1.24 ERA in six starts this season, along with 33 strikeouts over 29 innings.

Tommy Birch, a beat writer for the Iowa Cubs, noted that the buzz around Horton’s imminent call-up has grown stronger in recent days. “Cade has been dominant in Triple-A,” Birch stated. “It just makes sense to give him this shot, especially with the circumstances the Cubs are facing right now.”

The Cubs’ pitching staff has faced challenges lately, particularly with the absence of All-Star Justin Steele, who underwent season-ending surgery last month. With Imanaga also sidelined, the Cubs’ pitching depth is being tested. Counsell acknowledged that Horton could help alleviate some of the pressure on the staff. “It’s a tough situation, but we’ve shown resilience in managing injuries,” he said.

As the Cubs approach Saturday’s game, they are also weighing their options regarding future rotations, especially once Imanaga returns. If Horton performs well, it could lead to a reshuffling of pitchers, possibly sending current starters like Ben Brown or Colin Rea to the bullpen. The Cubs are hoping Horton can establish himself in the rotation during Imanaga’s absence.

Horton, who has showcased his talent after recovering from injuries that limited his previous season, is excited about the opportunity. “I’m ready to give it my all,” Horton said. “This is everything I’ve worked for.”

With Imanaga’s timeline for recovery still uncertain, the Cubs will likely rely on Horton for an extended period. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer stated, “We have to make sure it’s the right time for Cade, but his success so far has been hard to ignore.”

The Cubs are gearing up for their series against the Mets, and Horton’s debut will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike, hoping he can become a key player in the team’s strategy moving forward.
