BERKELEY, Calif. — The University of California, Berkeley, secured its first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) win by defeating Virginia 75-61 on Wednesday night at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears, led by sophomore point guard Andrej Stojakovic‘s 23 points, outplayed the Cavaliers in a game marked by sloppy play and missed opportunities for Virginia.

Cal (8-7, 1-3 ACC) dominated the second half, starting with an 8-0 run and maintaining a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. Stojakovic, who averages 20 points per game, scored all his points from midrange, highlighting Virginia’s defensive breakdowns. Cal’s reserves also contributed significantly, with two players adding 10 points each.

Virginia (8-3, 1-3 ACC) struggled to maintain momentum after a strong start. The Cavaliers initially led 9-3 but quickly lost control, allowing Cal to take a 35-32 lead at halftime. Key players like Andrew Rohde, who scored 14 points, and Jacob Cofie, who added 11 points and 10 rebounds, couldn’t overcome Cal’s aggressive defense and efficient offense.

Interim head coach Ron Sanchez faced criticism for questionable substitutions and an inability to reignite Virginia’s energy. Despite Rohde’s six assists and improved ball movement, the Cavaliers shot just 30% from the field compared to Cal’s 43%. Sloppy plays, including turnovers and fouls on three-point attempts, further hampered Virginia’s efforts.

The loss raises concerns about Virginia’s consistency, particularly in rebounding and defensive stops. Cal’s five blocks and strong offensive rebounding exposed Virginia’s frontcourt vulnerabilities. The Cavaliers will look to regroup as they face Stanford next, while Cal hosts Virginia Tech on Saturday.
