Canadiens Sign Swedish Defenseman to Two-Way Deal
The Montreal Canadiens have recently signed defenseman Gustav Lindström to a two-way contract. The Swedish player entered training camp with the Anaheim Ducks on a professional tryout contract (PTO), but did not make the final roster and was released last week. This signing indicates the Canadiens’ strategy to strengthen their depth in the defensive lineup.
Following his release from the Ducks, Lindström was placed on waivers with intentions to be assigned to the Laval Rocket, Montreal’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. This move is seen as a reinforcement for the Rocket as well as a strategic depth option for the Canadiens in case of injuries within their main defensive squad.
Lindström, who is set to turn 26 later this month, has participated in parts of five different National Hockey League (NHL) seasons. Originally drafted as a second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, he has primarily served in a bottom-pairing or press box role. Over his career, Lindström has recorded 25 points, consisting of 2 goals and 23 assists, across 128 NHL games. His performance metrics, including a career Corsi For percentage (CF%) of 44.6, reflect his experience gained largely with teams undergoing rebuilding phases.
While Lindström’s reputation is not one of an offensive powerhouse, his speed on the ice is often noted for allowing him to position himself effectively to disrupt opposing plays. This asset is particularly beneficial for a defenseman, providing the potential to contribute positively to team efforts in terms of possession metrics, despite playing in lower-ranked teams’ lines. His familial connection to former NHL player Olof Lindström, known from his time with the San Jose Sharks, adds a layer of interest to his career.
