In a surprising turn of events at the Shanghai Masters, Carlos Alcaraz was defeated by Tomas Machac during the men’s singles quarterfinals held on Thursday, October 10, 2024. The match took place at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Tennis Center in Shanghai, China.
Alcaraz, ranked World No. 2, faced a formidable opponent in Machac, who has previously demonstrated his prowess by defeating top players, including a notable win against Novak Djokovic in Geneva. This latest victory marks Machac’s second triumph over a Top-5 player.
The match concluded with Machac securing a straight-set victory of 7-6(5), 7-5. The 23-year-old Czech athlete displayed confidence and consistency, particularly in the opening set’s tie-break, continuing his strong performance into the second set. “From the first game until the last one, his level was so high,” Alcaraz remarked about Machac’s performance. “I thought that he was going to give me an opportunity, a window, but he didn’t,” added the Spaniard.
Despite his efforts, Alcaraz was unable to counter Machac’s aggressive and relentless strategy on the court. “His ball speed, it was unbelievable,” Alcaraz continued, praising Machac’s level of play. “Honestly, I felt good on the court, I felt the ball really well, I was hitting well, I was moving well. But, at some points, I didn’t know what to do.”
After breaking back in the second set, Alcaraz attempted a comeback, but Machac maintained the pressure, ultimately dominating the crucial moments to clinch the match.
Alcaraz’s performance at the Rolex Shanghai Masters came to an unexpected close after a 13-match winning streak. This defeat stands as his first since an earlier setback in a second-round match. Alcaraz has already qualified for the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, indicating potential for future successes in the remaining season.
