Cathy Freeman, the celebrated Australian athlete, made a rare appearance to support the Matildas during their successful qualification for the Paris Olympics at Marvel Stadium. Despite her recent injury, Freeman, using a walking stick for mobility, witnessed a remarkable 13-0 aggregate win by the Matildas over Uzbekistan, with Michelle Heyman scoring four goals.

The 50-year-old Freeman, who recently suffered an Achilles tendon injury, is on the path to recovery after initially relying on crutches for mobility. Her presence at the stadium was a significant boost for the team.

In a symbolic twist of fate, Cathy Freeman, who famously lit the flame at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, was honored with a grandstand at Accor Stadium coinciding with her support for the Matildas’ victory. Freeman’s history-making win at the Sydney Olympics has solidified her legacy as an inspirational figure in Australian sports.

Stephanie Catley, the captain of the Matildas, expressed her pride at securing qualification for another Olympics, especially under challenging circumstances with key players like Kyah Simon absent due to injuries. The sell-out crowd of 54,120 at Marvel Stadium witnessed a dominant performance by the Matildas.
