Cavs’ Garland and Thompson Forge Bond Ahead of NBA Playoffs

CLEVELAND, Ohio — As the NBA playoffs approach, Cleveland Cavaliers stars Tristan Thompson and Darius Garland reflect on their unique relationship, which encompasses mentorship, personal challenges, and a shared ambition for a championship.
Thompson, a stalwart in Cleveland for more than a decade, has been a guiding force for Garland as the 25-year-old point guard entered the league. This season, as both players gear up for potential playoff glory, their bond continues to strengthen amid a backdrop of challenges both on and off the court.
“Every rookie needs his vet,” Thompson said. For Garland, that vet has been Thompson, whose 11 seasons in Cleveland have seen him navigate the ups and downs of professional basketball.
Garland grew up under the influence of his father, Winston Garland, an NBA veteran. Demonstrating immense potential, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to further his basketball career. By eighth grade, he was playing varsity, ultimately earning accolades that propelled him to Vanderbilt University before being drafted by the Cavaliers in 2019 as the fifth overall pick.
However, his ascent was marred by injuries, including a significant setback at Vanderbilt when he tore his meniscus. “It was rough at times, especially my rookie year,” Garland reflected. “Going 19-46 as a team and navigating my own health issues was disheartening.”
Despite early struggles, Garland soon showcased his skills. By his third year, he earned his first All-Star nod, igniting the Cavaliers’ resurgence. Last season dealt him further obstacles, including a broken jaw that sidelined him for 19 games. Nonetheless, he finished the season with average stats of 18.0 points and 6.5 assists, leading the Cavs into the conference semifinals.
“It’s been a rollercoaster,” Garland said. “But I’ve learned resilience. I’m thankful for guys like Tristan who have been there for me.”
As the playoffs loom, both players are motivated to reclaim a title for Cleveland, the city that has treasured its first and only NBA championship—won by the Cavaliers in 2016. Reflecting on that victory, Thompson noted, “It means everything. The fans had been waiting for so long for a championship. When we won, all I could think about were those moments with fans who cried tears of joy.”
This season, the Cavaliers have showcased exceptional teamwork, starting with a record amount of wins early in the season. The “Core Four” of Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen, and Garland are in search of bringing another championship home.
“We’ve got to keep riding this momentum,” Garland said, underscoring the importance of learning from past disappointments to achieve their goal this postseason.
“I remember the 2016 Finals and the feeling of all of us coming together as a team,” Thompson said. “It’s about knowing that every game counts, and preparing intensely for our matchups.”
Both players are keenly aware of the weight on their shoulders—a city that yearns for another championship and an era of renewed hope within a franchise that has ascended toward the NBA elite.
<p“As much as this is a team sport, it feels personal for me,” Garland admitted, his desire for success fueled by critics who doubted him in the past. “This season is a chance to show everyone that I can compete at the highest level.”
With their chemistry and experience as core components, the Cavaliers head into the playoffs poised to make a mark—as both Thompson and Garland seek to carve their names into Cleveland’s storied basketball history.
