CBS Ends 70-Year Tradition of Broadcasting the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
CBS has decided to end its long-standing tradition of broadcasting the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade after more than 70 years. This decision marks a significant shift, as CBS will no longer compete with NBC, which has been the official broadcaster of the parade since 1954.
The reason behind CBS’s decision is speculated to be the insufficient advertising revenue from sponsors, although no official announcement has been made by the network. This year, NBC will be the sole broadcaster of the event, with coverage also available on their streaming service, Peacock.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is scheduled to take place on November 28, with coverage beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at noon at Macy’s Herald Square store on 34th Street. An encore presentation will be aired at 2 p.m. on NBC. The hosts for the 2024 parade will be Al Roker, Savannah Guthrie, and Hoda Kotb.
Historically, the parade has been a major event, attracting a large audience. In 2023, the parade was watched by 28.5 million viewers, a 6 percent increase from the previous year.
