HONG KONG, Feb. 11, 2025 — Renowned Filipino chef Margarita A. Fores has died at the age of 65, her son Amado confirmed on social media Tuesday.
Fores’s passing was described as ‘sudden’ and ‘unexpected’ in Amado’s Instagram post, which prompted an outpouring of condolences from friends, family, and followers. Sources indicate she died in Hong Kong, though the cause was not disclosed.
“Dear Friends and Family, it is with a heavy heart that I share the sudden passing of my Mom, Margarita A. Fores. Our family is mourning this unexpected loss, and we kindly ask for your prayers during this time,” Amado wrote.
The community has since rallied to honor the award-winning chef’s impactful legacy in the culinary world. Notable personalities, including 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival Best Supporting Actress Kakki Teodoro, expressed their sorrow through social media tributes.
Margarita Fores hailed from a prominent family, being a member of the Araneta clan in the Philippines. She was a cousin of politician Mar Roxas, further highlighting her ties to a legacy of influence and success.
Fores began her culinary career in 1986, spending four months in Italy learning the language and cooking style. She initially started as a caterer before opening her first restaurant, Cibo, in 1997, which would grow to 20 locations across the Philippines.
Her culinary accolades included the title of Asia’s Best Female Chef by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, awarded in December 2016. She was known for her commitment to raising the profile of Filipino cuisine, blending traditional flavors with contemporary techniques.
Over the years, she expanded her brand, opening other establishments such as Lusso and Grace Park, and also ventured into catering and floral design. Cibo earned recognition as one of the world’s finest pizza chains, ranking 44th in the 2024’s 50 Top World Artisan Pizza Chains.
“Margarita was more than just a chef; she was a pioneer who brought Filipino cuisine to the international stage, leaving an indelible mark on the culinary landscape,” said one industry peer who requested anonymity. “Her passion, dedication, and spirit will continue to inspire many.”
As the culinary community mourns her loss, plans for memorial events and tributes are underway, reflecting her profound impact on both the gastronomic scene and the lives she touched.
