Central Florida Braces for Breezy Winds, Heavy Rain, and Potential Tornadic Activity
ORLANDO, Fla. — Central Florida residents are preparing for a dramatic shift in weather as a cold front approaches, bringing breezy winds, heavy rain, and the potential for isolated tornadic activity on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025. The region, which enjoyed unseasonably warm temperatures Saturday, will face a stark contrast as the system moves in from the northwest.
Winds are expected to gust upwards of 30 mph, with the possibility of brief tornadic spin-ups, particularly along the I-4 corridor. “We cannot rule out the possibility for a brief tornadic spin-up, even if it’s just for a moment,” said a local meteorologist. Widespread rain showers are forecast across Central Florida, with some areas potentially receiving 1 to 2 inches of precipitation.
The cold front, currently stalled across the I-10 corridor from Tallahassee to Jacksonville, will push south and east Sunday. Showers are expected to begin along I-75 and Marion County by mid-morning, intensifying as the day progresses. Temperatures will peak between 68 and 80 degrees before dropping significantly as the front passes.
By Monday, highs will plummet to the 50s, marking a 20-degree drop from weekend temperatures. The cooler trend will continue into the workweek, with another front bringing rain and even a potential rain-snow mix to northern Florida by Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight lows are expected to dip into the 30s and 40s, a stark contrast to the mid-70s experienced Saturday.
Residents are advised to stay weather-aware Sunday, particularly during the afternoon when the strongest storms are likely. “Tomorrow afternoon will include Impact Weather as we will be keeping a close eye on the radar,” officials warned. Showers are expected to taper off by evening, but the cooler conditions will persist through the week.
